This page contains answers to frequently asked questions regarding the Counselling Skills in Practice: 5-day intensive workshop.
Yes, this intensive is mandatory and cannot be completed online. You need to pass this unit before you can start your placement.
The face-to-face component of this unit is currently only being undertaken on campus in Canberra.
There are 3 assessments for this unit. For Assessment 3 (due Monday Week 7) you will need to record a role play session on the Thursday afternoon/evening of the Intensive. Please refer to UCLearn or the unit outline for more information on your assessment.
Please note, you will need to use the same student for both recordings. If you have a friend or family member enrolled and attending this same unit you will not be permitted to do these recordings with them.
UC academics will be running the workshop and their bios will be posted on canvas during O Week.
Yes, the workshop will involve roleplaying activities with other students.
No, there is no online option for the intensive workshop.
The Counselling Skills in Practice unit, and the included workshop, runs twice a year. Therefore, if you wish to take a study break you can still return to do this unit. However, you will still need to complete and pass this unit prior to starting your practical component of your program. If you are considering taking a break from study, please contact your Student Success Advisor to discuss your options.
The intensive is held in week 5 of the Counselling skills in practice unit, you will be expected to work through the content of this unit each week as you have done for all the previous units.
These intensive workshops are currently scheduled to run twice a year in June and November.
Depending on where you are located, you can travel to Canberra by car, rail, bus, or air. You’ll need to make your own travel arrangements. More information on how to get to Canberra and the university campus can be foundhere.

Yes, if you are travelling to Canberra by air, students are responsible for their own travel to the campus.
Please bring any items that you usually require to undertake your studies, such as pens, notebooks, and any other note taking material. Students will be required to make recordings of their sessions, so we advise that you bring your phone, as well as your laptop to each session. Students will also have access to wi-fi at the campus, with computers for use in the library. More information about the student spaces available can be foundhere.
If you are attending this intensive in winter please remember to bring warm clothing as winter in Canberra is cold with average temperatures between 1 - 12°C, dropping below 0°C at night.
Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be provided during breaks throughout the week. A microwave and fridge will be available for use. A variety of dining options are also available on campus, you can check them out here.
